CAPTAIN
G.A.GRAHAM
MEMORIAL FUND UPDATE
JANUARY 2009

Back to Restoration Page

As we enter 2009, the year which marks the centenary of Captain Graham’s death, it is perhaps appropriate to provide an update on the current position of the Fund and its aims.

Due to the generosity of businesses, breed clubs and individual Irish Wolfhound devotees around the world, over the last 12 months donations totalling in excess of £2,000 (USD 2,899, Euro 2,075) have been received.

This is a tremendous effort for which I offer grateful thanks to all who have responded so magnificently. Andy Barton and I expect, in the very near future, to finalize the instruction of the Dursley stonemason so that work on the grave restoration can begin.

The construction of the new Rednock School, built on the site of and named after the property where Graham and his dogs lived, has progressed rapidly and is scheduled to open later this year. Andy is actively engaged in discussions with the school authorities to identify an acceptable format for a commemorative plaque and the most appropriate location for it within the premises. Once the requirements are known we shall consider costs and commission the most suitable and affordable plaque which satisfies the demands of the school’s governing body.

The vicar of St Mark’s Church in Dursley has confirmed that she will lead a rededication service of the restored grave. Friday 23rd October 2009 has been chosen for this, with the unveiling of the school plaque on the same day.

Andy, Rory and I are considering a number of other ideas for events which it might be possible to hold that weekend as part of the centenary celebrations. The realization of any of which will inevitably depend upon the availability of funding. Further details about the centenary weekend celebrations will be provided over the coming months.

Finally, whilst a substantial sum has already been raised, I appeal once again to Irish Wolfhound lovers at home and abroad; please consider making a donation to ensure that we have sufficient funds to complete the task in hand.

Thank you.

With Best Wishes for the New Year
Dr Nicholas Wilkes
